WASHINGTON D.C. – The United States Helicopter Safety Team has released new statistics on accident rates for U.S. civil helicopters along with new data on fatal accident rates and fatalities.
For the first seven months of 2014, there have been 3.94 helicopter accidents for every 100,000 flight hours. This is a 51% decrease compared to the 2001-05 baseline determined by the USHST parent organization, the International Helicopter Safety Team. This also is a 22% reduction compared to the 5.06 rate posted in 2009 and a 12% reduction compared to the 4.46 rate posted in 2012. (See charts below for complete data.)
These results are especially encouraging because they include data from the month of July which historically tallies the most helicopter accidents in the United States during the year, according to officials..
In addition, the rate of fatal accidents is down so far in 2014 compared to 2013, which showed a troubling upward spike. During the first seven months of 2014, there were 0.53 fatal helicopter accidents per 100,000 flight hours compared to a rate of 0.86 for all of 2013.
The decrease also is reflected in the fatality rate. There were 1.79 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours in 2013 compared to 0.91 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours so far in 2014.
Safety experts at the USHST said they know that accident data from the rest of the summer has not been gathered yet and there are four months still left in the year, but the results at this time are promising, noting a stronger safety culture seems to be growing in the civil helicopter community.
The USHST and its parent organization, the IHST, promote safety and work to reduce accidents. IHST was formed in 2005 to address factors that were affecting the helicopter accident rate. Prior to 2006, the number of worldwide civil helicopter accidents was rising at a rate of 2.5% per year. Since 2006, the number of accidents worldwide has been decreasing by an annual rate of 2%, officials noted.
Turbo the Flying Dog, a picture book for children ages 4 to 8, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign, designed to fund illustrations, a small first run of the book, and associated business costs. Authors Kelly Kennedy and Victoria Zajko describe the book an adventure exploring the themes of aviation, animal rescue, and family.
Kickstarter is a platform that helps creative projects find funding. Backers are offered rewards for different levels of funding. Rewards for the Turbo the Flying Dog Kickstarter include copies of the book “pawed” by real life dogs Turbo and Olive, invitations to the book’s dog-friendly kick-off party, and a special airport visit from the authors and dogs.
Kennedy and Zajko plan to write a series of book that touch on themes such as women in aviation and the history of aviation. They are currently working on the second book, “Turbo Learns to Fly.”
The authors said they hope for the book to be available via Amazon.com and at local events in time for holiday delivery.
Zajko is a commercial pilot working in aviation insurance. Her dog, Turbo, is a 20 pound mix – the DNA test said he was Chinese Crested, Chinook and Collie. He was adopted on New Years Eve 2012. He is an avid aviator and enjoys taking vacations with his humans, mostly by air in their plane.
Kennedy is a newspaper publisher and minored in creative writing in college. She believes strongly in rescue and animal advocacy. Her dog, Olive, is a schnoodle (part schnauzer, part poodle) adopted in 2011.
OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Oshkosh chapter of Women in Aviation, International, is holding its fourth annual Frosting for Flight cupcake competition and cupcake sale to raise funds for its Spirit of Flight scholarship.
Cupcakes will be on sale for $1 each or six for $5.
Locals are encouraged to sign up to compete. Represent your company or organization at the fundraising event, or enter on your own. Form a one- or two-person team to bake and decorate a prize-winning cupcake.
Judging is based on taste, appearance, and theme. Contestants are encouraged to carry out a cupcake theme through costume/dress and table decorations. Prizes to the top three contestants will be awarded.
The event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1-3 p.m. at the Wittman Regional Airport Terminal
Building. Admission is free. The event is open to the public.
